Central Florida association of physicians from the Indian subcontinent
CAPI Legacy
Our Roots
CAPI traces its origins to 1995, when a visionary group of Central Florida physicians came together with a bold mission: to crystallize the strength, unity, and contributions of the Indian-American medical community while addressing unique challenges. And, to collectively celebrate and share Indian culture within the community, thereby fostering inclusivity and mutual understanding. Inspired by a shared desire to create a supportive network for professional collaboration, cultural connection, and community service, they laid the foundation for what would become a transformative organization.
Originally known as DOSA – DOCTORS OF SOUTH ASIA, the group’s first order of business was to draft bylaws and establish processes that would set a lasting framework for growth. Their vision extended beyond professional camaraderie. They sought to enrich the lives of their members while honoring their shared heritage and elevating their collective voice in Central Florida.
DOSA was founded with the support of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) to address the unique challenges faced by Indian American physicians as they navigate their integration into the U.S. medical community. CAPI is the only local AAPI Chapter out of 90+ chapters in the USA to have hosted four successful Annual Conventions. CAPI has a vote in the Governing body of AAPI. Recognizing the need for professional guidance and a strong network, DOSA served as a vital platform to help Indian American physicians overcome barriers such as credential recognition, adaptation to the American healthcare system, and cultural integration.
From its earliest days, DOSA focused on organizing educational events, networking opportunities, and impactful community service initiatives, underscoring the founding members’ deep commitment to both healthcare excellence and giving back to their local community. In 2008, the organization evolved into CAPI to reflect its expanding membership and mission, now welcoming not only physicians but also dental professionals. The rebranding signified a broadened focus: to unite medical and dental professionals across Central Florida under a shared banner of service, growth, and cultural pride.
Today, CAPI stands as a living legacy of the collective vision of its members – a testament to the power of unity, professional excellence, and a commitment to serving both the Indian-American community and Central Florida as a whole.
